Using AI responsibly as a fiction author
Practical rules of thumb: check retailer and contest policies, keep your voice, protect your manuscript.
Steps
- Read each retailer's current AI-content policy before publishing; Amazon KDP requires you to disclose AI-generated text, images or translations when publishing, but not AI-assisted work (editing, brainstorming, error-checking) per its Content Guidelines (checked 2026-10-18).
- Check each AI tool's data settings and privacy policy before uploading unpublished manuscripts.
- Keep AI for brainstorming, critique and checking; keep final prose your own.
- Never trust AI for facts or citations without checking a primary source.
Tools for this workflow
- Kindle Direct Publishing: Publishing on Amazon and Kindle Unlimited.
- ChatGPT: Brainstorming, outlining, critique and a custom GPT loaded with your style sheet.
- Claude: Long-manuscript critique and developmental feedback.
- Gemini: Writers who live in Google Docs and Drive.
AI output can be wrong. Check facts and keep final prose in your own voice. See using AI responsibly.
