Build a series bible you can feed to any AI
One living document of characters, places, rules and timeline that keeps you and your AI tools consistent across books.
Steps
- Create one master document (or an Obsidian/Notion folder) with sections: Characters, Places, World rules, Timeline, Running threads, Style sheet.
- For each character, record only facts that appear on the page: name spellings, age, eye/hair colour, key relationships, the chapter where each fact first appears.
- After every drafted chapter, paste the chapter into an AI assistant with the extraction prompt below and add the new facts to the bible yourself.
- Before drafting a new book, upload the bible into a source-grounded tool (e.g. Gemini Notebook) and ask it questions instead of relying on memory.
Copy-ready prompts
Read the chapter below. List every new fact it establishes about characters, places, objects, dates and world rules, as bullet points with a short quote for each. Do not invent anything not in the text. [paste chapter]
Tools for this workflow
- Obsidian: A private, linkable series bible stored as plain files.
- Notion: Release calendars, series bibles and marketing trackers.
- Campfire: Building a series bible with characters, places and lore.
- Novelcrafter: Writers who want a series bible tightly linked to the manuscript and control over which AI model they use.
- Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM): Asking questions of your own series bible and previous books for continuity.
AI output can be wrong. Check facts and keep final prose in your own voice. See using AI responsibly.
